ISLAMABAD: Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights was told on Wednesday that 1,040 people were killed in Balochistan in the last two years.

Balochistan Police Crime Branch DIG Shakeel Durani told the committee that 859 cases of killing were registered in the province and some 766 killers were arrested.

“Approximately 77 people including 58 lawyers were killed and 125 injured in Quetta hospital blast,” he said, adding that 113 cases of terrorism were registered in the province in which some 202 people were killed and 30 terrorists were apprehended.

“Some 52 dead bodies were recovered by police from different areas of the province and 45 cases were registered, whereas nine persons were taken into custody in this regard,” he told the committee. The DIG said that 764 people were murdered in personal enmity and 715 people were arrested while 670 cases were also registered.

He said police had not any data of missing persons in the province. He said that the court had instructed police to carry out DNA test of every recovered dead body but due to lack of the facility in the province they had to contact Punjab for the same.

The committee also showed its reservations over continuous absence of Rangers DG from the committee’s meetings. It was agreed to bring the matter into notice of the Interior Ministry.

The committee was told that the National Commission for Human Rights did not have any funds to give salary to its employees.

The meeting, held at the Parliament House, was attended by senators Sattara Ayyaz, Muhammad Mohsin Khan Leghari, Mufti Abdul Sattar, Nisar Muhammad and Farhat Ullah Babar, with Senator Nasreen Jalil in the chair.
