Naya Pakistan – with same old hurdles

Author: Kiran Butt

Pakistan undoubtedly is one of the most talented country in the world. While our population growth rate is the highest yet of the total population 64 per cent is below the age of 30, and 29 percent is between the ages of 15-29 years.

This youth is the hope, future and has the potential to convert the dream in reality that we all are wishing about Pakistan. But what scares more is the not future or the past it’s the day we live in. Where there are problems, there always opportunities as well.

Pakistan is a country blessed with enormous natural resources, fertile land, mountains, rivers and what not, yet when we look at our economical side its gives altogether a different perspective.

Dictators, politicians, Who did what, is a debate that can go and the never ending blame game will start – That’s done, its history! 64 percent of the youth of this country is either starting their careers, jobs, businesses, but have we ever thought of the environment they will be entering in?

At each step reality strikes them, their hopes are being shattered and so is their future and the future of this country.

Most of this young generation has followed Prime Minister Imran Khan, as a hero as a hope of changing Pakistan, the slogan of Naya Pakistan – which itself reflects to overhaul the system.

He has struggled, fought against the odds created awareness of maters which were less known less discussed for example economy, corruption, politics, tax system.

Everyone who voted for him had a valid reason to vote. And those reasons were expectations, that PM IK would revolutionize government departments while changing the system.

Life would be easier, meritocracy, reforms in bureaucracy, less of sifarish system. From powerful people, to powerful system.

However, in “Naya Pakistan” nothing has changed, it’s the same bureaucracy at same positions doing exact same things they had been doing for good 5 to 10 years and more yet my Prime Minister expects them to revolutionize the system.

The system is hostage to these people and staff associated to them. They are more powerful than the system. Staying at same position at for years and investing – they are stronger than the system.

The lower staff of these officers are the main front man, because they know the system better than the system itself, actually they are the system.

From postings to other official affairs, lower staff guides the decision makes, thus leading to corruption, mismanagement, delays, incompetency etc which costs public their peace, frustration and above all forced to give in to corrupt practices as no one would want to suffer.

One does not need a rocket science to handle this, just reform, order reshuffling from top to bottom at continuous intervals.

Not only the bureaucracy but also the staff from phone operators, Principal Staff, section officers everyone involved in this heinous crime of corruption and it is widely seen as the main malaise in the society.

Rotation is the key factor to break the chain, with in the department and at the top level. Fix the duration. As much as the senior bureaucracy is important, the lower staff holds the key – where there is no focus at all.

It will benefit, as the corrupt and incompetent officers/staff who have held their respective posts for years and year will move thus breaking their power, exposing their incompetence and while they will move to new post, this will require them time to build their strength on but before they could do so they will be posted out.

On the other hand, if a competent person is posted to a new place it will be an advantage to develop and work for the betterment. It’s a win win for everyone!

With Prime Minister Imran Khan, I wish to see a day where he lives upto the promise of Naya Pakistan. He gave us hope, he made us dream, he has the power, he has the vision, he has the time – Praying that he changes the system and the system doesn’t change him!
