Early undergraduate admissions, online entry test introduced at UET Lahore

Author: News Desk

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore is a premier and pioneering institute of engineering education in the country. It provides best value for money in engineering education due to its low fee structure compared to almost all other engineering universities in Punjab and federal capital.

However, on account of admission schedule of UET having been linked with declaration of second year Intermediate result by the Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs), the admission process was delayed as compared to competing institutions that provide engineering education (like NUST, PIEAS, FAST, GIKI and LUMS) who offer admission based on 1st year Intermediate result. Moreover, these institutions charge heavy admission and tuition fees without waiting for result of 2nd year. Their classes also commence at the end of August or early September. As a consequence, a candidate who has been admitted in any such institute and subsequently earns admission in UET Lahore faces a major financial loss due to the refund policy currently in vogue.

The statistical analysis carried out by the university for the past few years also revealed that first-year and second-year marks are positively correlated with the final intermediate marks to almost the same degree.

Keeping the above facts in view and after detailed deliberation on the matter, the Academic Council of the University in its 221st meeting held on 15th January 2020 recommended and Syndicate in its 1/2020 meeting held on 29th February and 5th March 2020 approved “Undergraduate Admission Policy 2020” for UET Lahore. This policy enables UET Lahore to grant admission based on marks in Entry Test, Matric, and Intermediate 1st year (or O level).

According to the newly approved policy for students of local BISEs the admission merit will be calculated based on Entry Test marks 30% weight, Matric marks 25% weight, and First Year marks 45% weight. In case of DAE, the sum of First Year and Second Year marks will carry 45% weight in the merit aggregate. The admission of “A” Level candidates will be based on Entry Test marks 30% weight and “O” Level Percentage marks 70% weight.

The admission will be conditional and candidate who are unable to earn 60% or higher marks in their Intermediate or DAE, will be cancelled and their dues will be reimbursed in full without deduction. Similarly, the admission of “A” level candidates who are unable to score at least a “C” grade in Physics, Mathematics/Biology and Chemistry/CS will be cancelled and their dues will be reimbursed in full without deduction.

For the last two decades, the UET Lahore has been entrusted with the responsibility by the Government of Punjab to conduct Entry Test for admission in Engineering and Technology programs at all public sector Universities in the Punjab. This year, the UET has also taken another step for the facilitation of prospective candidates seeking admission in UET and other public sector engineering institutions in the province. For the first time in the history of the University, the UET Entry Test will be held online this year, immediately at the end of Intermediate Theory Examinations of second-year. In this regard, the University has signed an MoU with Virtual University of Pakistan to conduct the Entry Test at the designated VU campuses in Punjab.

The university believes that the decisions of early admissions and online test will facilitate the candidates in the Entry Test and provide them a level playing field in choosing the engineering institution of their choice. This will particularly help the candidates belonging to lower and lower middle class families.

The colleges and institutes affiliated with UET Lahore will also follow the same admission policy. The details about the admission policy are available on the admission portal of the University at admission.uet.edu.pk. For further information on the new admission policy, the candidates may approach the Admission Office through email at admission@uet.edu.pk.
