Is this ‘Creativity’?

Author: Mahrukh Aftab

For a student, creativity is quite a difficult thing to handle. Two days ago I was waiting for someone to talk to me in my class. Suddenly our teacher arrived and gave us a creative writing topic, My Best Friend. I was like: “Seriously are you kidding me. I mean like I am a 9th grader you are asking me to write on MY BEST FRIEND.”

I haven’t had much of an option so I decided to write. But before penning down any word, I asked my teacher: “Can I write down the truth because I have no best friend?”

“No you can’t just do what you’ve been doing since day one, just lie about having a best friend,” replied my teacher. Since I couldn’t lie about that, so I just wrote down whatever came to my mind. I wrote and wrote and after 30 minutes, I handed over the sheet to my teacher.

After going through my work she said: “This is just not right. Why did you write this? You could’ve right something else, like having a best friend… and all that stuff. You wrote about negative things.”

Do you know what I thought that day? I thought that she was asking me to use the writing formula which everyone uses and there is no creativity in it. There are some questions that came to my mind that day.

Why do you call this a creative writing when there is no creativity in it? Why do you want someone to lie about stuff when there’s no need to lie about it? Why don’t we let kids express their feelings? Why do we apply the same formula every single time when we know that the formula is called LIE?

All this ‘creativity’, what I believe, is extreme creativity. However, no one seems to understand it because no one wants to understand it. I admit that there are some mistakes in it. But how can you call something negative when one has written about his/her mother.

I just pen down the truth. My mother is my best friend, this is what I said. Where the hell do you find negativity in it? If this isn’t creativity then what do you call creativity? What is creativity according to you?

I wish I could ask her this when I was standing there, but I got hyper and she said: “Ustaad ki izat karein.”

All I would say that please let the boys and girls express their feelings and instead of arguing, help them so they can do better next time. And to all aspiring young ones, guys please don’t think that you can’t do anything. If you know that you are good in anything then try your best to make it happen. WORK HARD and silence your haters.
