ISLAMABAD: The issue of lack of quorum in the National Assembly was creating an embarrassing situation for the government, as it failed to pass two important resolutions on Tuesday, including the one for paying homage to the martyrs of September 6.

The National Assembly met under the chair of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. There were only 23 members in the house at the start of the session but the opposition did not point out quorum at that time, as Tuesday was a Private Members Day. Such days belong to the MNAs but most members were absent from the house while only 57 points of agenda were completed in 30 minutes.

It was agreed that two resolutions would be tabled, one to pay homage to the martyrs of September 6 war and second to condemn the Bangladesh government’s action regarding the hanging of Jamat-e-Islami leader Mir Qasim, but both resolutions could not be presented due to lack of quorum, pointed out by PPP MNA Abdul Sattar Bachani.

Under such situation, Penal of Chairmen member Pervez Malik had no choice but to adjourn the house till today. Members from opposition and government parties however, in their speeches, paid rich tributes to the September 6 martyrs and said that Pakistan’s defence was unshakeable and no one can succeed in efforts to destabilise the country. The members supported the struggle of Kashmiris as well. Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah held Premier Nawaz responsible of breaking of quorum in the lower house.
