KARACHI: Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) said this year Eidul Azha would generate around Rs 18.76 billion through skins and hides as approximately 12.20 million sacrificial animals would be slaughtered in the country.

Agha Saiddain, a senior member of PTA, told Daily Times that in the three days of Eidul Azha 7.93 million goats, 3.41 million bulls and cows, 700,000 sheep, and 20,000 other sacrificial animals would be slaughtered. ‘This activity would generate Rs 18.76 billion and if timely arrangements are not taken to save the skins and hides there are chances that around 25 percent of total collection of skins and hides in the country would get damaged,’ said Agha.

He added that in Karachi thousands of stakeholders get directly and indirectly benefited from the sale of sacrificial animals and it has generated an economy of more than Rs 300 billion in Karachi alone. It should be noted that more than 250,000 animals from interior parts of Sindh and Punjab have been brought to the cattle market at superhighway.
