KARACHI: The first council meeting of newly elected body of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will be held on September 28th at main KMC building.

Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Vohra and Municipal Commissioner KMC Dr Badar Jamil while discussing the agenda of the meeting said the council meeting would determine the number of KMC committees and their members.

The total number of elected council are 308 but three of them did not take oath. Previously KMC Council had 255 members. The sitting capacity in the City Council Hall has also been increased by 95 seats to 350.

The renovation work of the Council Hall has been completed with an amount of Rs 25 million. The last meeting of Council KMC (City District Government Karachi) was held on February 15, 2010 under chair of Nasreen Jalil, the then Deputy Mayor.

The constitution of rules will be prepared by Sindh’s Local Government Department but no meeting has been held yet in this regard. The Local Government Department will have to decide regulations under Schedule-VII and the matters conduct of business to be conducted by the council, prescription of quorum, question answers and other matters.

Besides constitution and functions of committees and sub-committees of the council, co-option of members thereon and rules of business by them will also be devised. Other procedures include procedure regulation execution of contracts, functions of the board and its chairman and vice-chairman and divisional and district boards.

Secretary Council of KMC Gufran Ahmad said in case the Local Government Department fails to make rules and regulations the KMC Council will use SLGO 2013 section 160 to carry out its rule of business.

In the absence of rules the council’s committees have rights to run affairs of the offices he added.
