FIA arrests teenager under cyber crime

Author: Staff Report

KARACHI. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday arrested a teenager for blackmailing a girl and uploading her pictures on social media, lodging the first case under the Cybercrime Law in Sindh.

The father of the girl had lodged a complaint in the mid of last month that a youth was blackmailing her daughter by uploading her pictures via social networking website, Facebook. Upon receiving the complaint, the FIA Cybercrime Cell acted swiftly and apprehended the youngster.

FIA officials said that the complainant father said that the younger was misusing her daughter pictures. Even started blackmailing her and demanding money from her. After the girl informed the family, the father approached the Cybercrime circle of the FIA and narrated the whole story.

The FIA’s Cybercrime circle’s officials then started working over the matter. “It was not a difficult job for us to trace and arrest the culprits because the victim girl knew him (suspect),” explained a cybercrime official Syed Abid Ali.

On the other hand, the teenager arrested over blackmailing a girl seemed while defending himself. He is a resident of Shah Faisal Colony and is about eighteen-year-old and doing graduation. “I did not forced her for the extortion money but I was asking to return my own money,” claimed the young arrested suspect.

Cybercrimes are on the rise in Pakistan. Dozens of cases have been registered at FIA’s Cyber Crime Circle this year alone. The social networking websites are being used in various acts of crime in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.

Besides kidnappings, various cases of blackmailing or threats through social media have occurred in the city. Very few of these cases attract the attention of the media as most are hushed to protect the honour of the victim.
