Just desserts: Serbia foils cake smuggling plot

Author: AFP

BELGRADE: Serbian customs officials said on Friday that they had seized half a ton of cake smuggled across the border from Bulgaria.

The cakes — 137 boxes, of several varieties — were found on a bus that was making its way from Bulgaria to Spain. While both of those countries are in the EU, the vehicle’s route through non-EU member Serbia meant its sugary cargo needed to be declared.

In total there were 500 kilograms of the dessert, without any documentation, Serbian customs authorities said in a statement. The driver and passengers said they had nothing to declare apart from their own belongings and some food and vegetables, the statement added.

But officers searching the bus at the Gradina border crossing found it was full of boxes of cake, including in the toilet cabin. Authorities gave no further details on the alleged smugglers or their shipment.
