ISLAMABAD: Pakistan became the second most successful team in the 50-over format on late Friday when they beat West Indies by 111 runs in the first of the three-match ODI series in Sharjah. Pakistan’s ODI team now has 455 wins under their belt in 864 matches with a win percentage of 54.25. On the number one spot, Australia are well-placed with 547 wins from 884 matches and a win percentage of 64.73. Before Fridays night’s victory, Pakistan were level with India with 454 wins in their account but right-hand batsman Babar Azam’s well-constructed maiden ton and left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz’s four-for helped the team jump to the second position. Pakistan are currently ranked ninth in the ODIs and are hoping to clean sweep the West Indies 3-0 in the 50-over series to jump up one place to eighth. Both teams are fighting for direct qualification into the 2019 World Cup with the cut-off date set for September 2017.

Earlier, Pakistan whitewashed the World T20 champions 3-0 in the T20I series. Both teams will conclude the series with three Test matches after playing the remainder of ODIs in the UAE.
