COLIMA, Mexico: Mexican authorities evacuated 400 people as a precaution due to a major volcano spewing lava, officials said.

Authorities imposed a security perimeter of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) around the ‘Volcano of Fire’ in the western state of Colima.

They evacuated the small villages of La Becerrera and La Yerbabuena “to protect families” in the area, said state governor Jose Ignacio Peralta.

Another village was evacuated in the neighboring state of Jalisco, the civil protection service there said.

The state civil protection authority said lava had flowed one kilometer down from the crater, which soars to nearly 3,900 meters (12,800 feet).
