ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution moved by Khalida Mansoor urging the government to take steps for early construction of Diamer-Bhasha dam.
The Diamer-Bhasha dam is still in the preliminary stage of construction despite the passage of ten years. It was announced in 2006 but the foundation stone was laid down in 2011 by the then prime minister – Yusuf Raza Gillani.
The construction is hampered by financial constraints and political apathy. Once constructed it would be the highest earth-filled dam in the world and will have the capacity to generate 4,500Megawatts. The financial cost is expected to be $14 billion and is scheduled for completion by 2020.
