LAHORE: A three-match series between Pakistan’s national senior and the under-21 hockey teams will commence from Saturday here at the National Hockey Stadium Lahore. “Both sides are already attending preparation camps in Lahore and will play matches from October 8 to 10,” a Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) spokesman said on Wednesday. “The senior team are being trained at the National Hockey Stadium under Khawaja Junaid Ahmad, the head coach, while the junior squad are getting training at Johar Town Stadium under national junior head coach Tahir Zaman,” he said. Incidentally, both teams have upcoming international engagements in Malaysia.
The national senior side are getting ready to defend their title at the 4th Asian Champions Trophy in Kuantan, scheduled from October 20-30, whereas the junior team will be in action at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Baru, scheduled to be held from October 31 to November 6. Sultan of Johor Cup has now become the most prestigious annual international tournament for national junior teams. The spokesman said that the series between seniors and juniors would provide them useful match practice ahead of the important events.
