KARACHI: The Sindh government has finally bifurcated the education department into two new departments namely college education department and school education department.
The decision to bifurcate the education department was taken a few years back however the implementation on this could not be made for long. Chief secretary issued a notification No: SORI(S&GAD)2-4/2016 (Education) on Thursday in this regard.
According to the notification, Directorate General of Colleges is to be headed by Director General Colleges, while the School Education Department will work into Directorates
of Schools Education/ Primary/Elementary, Secondary and Higher Secondary to be headed by Director Schools Education, Primary/Elementary, Secondary and Higher Secondary.
The department of college education is assigned task for legislation, policy formulation and sector planning; college education including commerce education; university education excluding universities attached to other administrative departments i.e. health, livestock and agriculture; coordination of schemes for higher studies abroad.
The other tasks include: grant of scholarship; promotion of scientific research; production and distribution of education and scientific films; organization of all public libraries including municipal and other libraries and to keen liaison with universities, colleges, and special libraries for improving the standard of research and scholarship and further development of library science.
Similarly, copyrights for colleges; public private partnership; improvement in scientific, technology and professional education; evaluation of performance of institutions; development and funding of higher education in public and private sector; regulation of higher education in public and private sector; polytechnic and vocational schools.
Engineering works pertaining to higher education relating to construction and maintenance of network of colleges, technical education, etc.; grant of charter to award degrees in both public and private sectors; and linkages between institutions and industry as well as national and international organizations.
