The suicide rate has been increasing in Tharparkar, as the people don’t have the means to make both ends meet, besides being denied even basic facilities, which is a big issue neglected by the government of Sindh.

“Increasing number of suicides committed by women, men, young girls, children and even by couples jointly is alarming,” said Justice Majida Razvi, chairperson of Sindh Human Rights Commission, after visiting Thar. She explained officials and administrations must unite to rid serious matter from human rights. The commission is set to plan hosting a major consultation on this issue in Karachi at the end of December with experts and professionals to prepare recommendations.

This time, the economic status along with the social condition are causing the folks to end their lives by hanging themselves from trees and some of them also take poison or pesticides, or drowning themselves into wells.

Those who all neglected by the authorities, officials and the administration is a big question mark on the stability of humanity in Tharparkar.

When it comes to statistics expressed by regional police, more than 75 people took their lives in Tharparkar district whereas 55 committed suicides in Umerkot district till the November, 2019, 198 people in 2018, and 95 reportedly in 2017.

On the other hand activists and researchers working in the region insist that it should not be seen in separation from the region’s strategic importance and recent developments.

The Daily Times learnt that a large number of suicide cases are just because of family and social issues, of which Veeru and Nathu suicide case is abstracted recently. These two sisters married with two brothers whose ill-treatments and bad behaviours led these girls to commit suicide.

A social activist Ramesh Kumar while talking to Daily Times said that family issues, poverty, domestic violence, and psychological disorders are the main causes, but in Thur people do not have the basic facilities such as water, gas, electricity.

“Officials who did not have their own clothes now they have become millionaires while many cities of Sindh are being given a sound budgets to work in, while Thar is ignored,” he lamented.

When seeing the survey of NGOs working in Mitthi, people who elected the ministers are dying of starvation whereas the politicians’ dogs are fed cheese, baby carrots, yogurt, salmon, pumpkin, eggs and cooked chicken and being given good medical care.

The residents of Thar demanded that if there are Unhealthy foods, poor transportation, no electricity, gas, dirty water and almost no education need to be removed. “If so, the ratio will decrease”, they added.
