KEMU pro-VC temporarily restrained from working

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice of Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Thursday temporarily restrained Dr Asad Asalm from working as the pro-vice chancellor of the King Edward Medical University (KEMU).

The chief justice also sought reply from Dr Asad within two weeks on a petition against his appointment.

Iftikhar Ahmad, a local resident, has petitioned the high court.

The petitioner submitted that the government had appointed Dr Asad Aslam in violation of the law. He said that the King Edward Medical University Lahore Act 2005 did not allow the appointment of an acting vice chancellor.

He submitted that only the pro-vice chancellor could take the administrative control of the university until appointment of a permanent vice chancellor as per the law.

The counsel for the government in a reply to the petition said that the appointment of Dr Asad Aslam was temporary. He requested the court to dismiss the petition as it was “misconceived”.

The chief justice, however, after hearing the arguments suspended the impugned notification of appointing the pro-vice chancellor and also sought replies from the government and Dr Asad Aslam.
