KARACHI: Police caught a suspected extortionist red-handed in Hazara Colony and recovered the extortion receipt and some amount of cash from his possession on the midnight Tuesday in the limit of Defence Police Station.
Despite, the claim of restoration of better law and order situation by law enforcement agencies in the metropolis, extortionists roaming in the city threatening Vegetable venders in the vicinity of Kala Pul Bridge some half kilometer away from Defence PS.
The accused was identified as 68-years-old man Dilwar Khan son of Abdul Raheem, resident of Hazara Colony who was arrested by Defence Police on the complain of 31-year-man Aijaz son of Manzoor Hussain who sells vegetable on the railway plot which was recently evacuated after Sindh High court’s orders to the government last year.
When contacted, Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Khalid Hussain Abbasi confirmed the news and said that after receiving complain that a group has been threatening fruit and vegetables venders since the last few months to pay them an amount of Rs 500 per day or face consciences, police took action against them and arrested one accused red-handed who was giving extortion receipt of Rs 500 to complainant Aijaz.
He said Aijaz has recorded his statement that the accused has been taking Rs500 each day from him a rent fee selling vegetables in the area since the last four months.
However, police has already lodged First Information Report (FIR) against accused under 384/386/385 R/W 7-ATA which is sent to the investigation branch. Defence Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Hameedullah Khan told Daily Times that the case is under investigation and there is a possibility that a group may be involved in the matter.
