Army shares with govt vital leads on controversial newspaper report

ISLAMABAD: Important leads have been shared with the government regarding a story published against the national security in Dawn last week.

Sources told Daily Times that Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif also discussed the outcome of the investigation with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday at the Prime Minister’s House during a meeting. The top general shared the viewpoint of corps commanders as well.

Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan met Nawaz and shared important information. The interior minister apprised the PM about his meeting with the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) and Dawn editor as well.

Sources said Cyril Almeida, the reporter who filed the story, has important documents in the defence of his story, but who dictated him the details of an in-camera briefing is under investigation. Sources claimed that a minister shared the information with the reporter at a renowned coffee shop. However, independent sources did not confirm it.

They said the PM’s media cell’s role in the whole episode is also under investigation. Source also said a female official of the media cell has been interrogated in this regard.

The services of intelligence bureau have also been sought to reach the mastermind of the episode. Sources revealed further that a senior minister is still trying to save the civil-military relations. They added that the said minister took a senior bureaucrat on a long drive to discuss the issue. Sources claimed that the government would take a big decision in a few days as the army pressed it to expose the real culprit (s).

During the meeting they also discussed matters pertaining to national and regional security.

Sources said they also discussed three key issues that included Indian aggression at Line of Control, security situation at western borders and implementation on the National Action Plan (NAP).

The top general briefed Nawaz Sharif over the success of Operation Zarb-e-Azb and the plan of action by the security forces on the implementation on the NAP.

The prime minister expressed confidence in the response given by the Pakistani security forces against Indian aggression at the Line of Control.
