Sir: Last week during my lecture at a local Islamabad-based university, I was reminded of some famous lines of former US President John F Kennedy who once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.”

Against this wisdom, when I think about the role and contribution of our Pakistani rulers, bureaucrats, especially, retired and rehired ones, I can without any doubt say that they all have given crime, corruption, mismanagement and misuse of resources to the country. They have done nothing to change the fate of the ordinary people, particularly in the rural areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

They have done nothing for our future generations but only and only for their families and kith and kin, both at home and abroad. It is disgraceful for this society to produce such a breed of rulers, bureaucrats and technocrats. However, the relevant organisations must do some soul searching and strive to give selfless leaders to this country who may take this nation to new horizons of peace, progress and prosperity.
