LONDON: Former Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga has been sacked as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, the English second-tier club said on Tuesday, after less than three months in the job.

The 56-year-old was only appointed on July 30 following the club’s purchase by Chinese consortium Fosun International. Wolves lie 18th in the 24-team Championship, with four wins from their 14 league matches to date.

“Wolves will be conducting a thorough process to recruit a new head coach and won’t be revealing any timescales associated with this important task,” Wolves said that in a statement.

“The club would like to extend their thanks and best wishes to Walter and (assistant manager) Stefano (Cusin) for their contribution to Wolves during the season so far.” First-team coach Rob Edwards has been placed in charge on a temporary basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Former Inter Milan player Zenga had previously coached Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Catania, Palermo and Sampdoria.
