ISLAMABAD: An audit has pointed out widespread financial irregularities, running into millions of rupees, in the accounts of AllamaIqbal Open University (AIOU) and Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) Islamabad.

Despite the irrefutable evidence of corruption and corrupt practices, the vice chancellors of both the august universities have launched no action so far against the persons found responsible.

According to an audit report,the Vice Chancellor of QAU had appointed Shahid Ansari, a retired professor of Chemistry as “Controller Examination, after his retirement on hefty perks and privileges.

The QAU administration distributed a whopping amount of Rs 70 million among itsfavourite employees in the name of house rents and medical allowances while these funds were allocated for the welfare of the students.

The AIOU had also paid Rs 100 million to its employees illegally,as house rents while the vice chancellor of this university was not entitled to release these funds. Now directives have been issued to recover this amount.

The former vice chancellor of AIOU, DrNazir Ahmad Sangim had transferred Rs 1.5 million to his personal account illegally. He was receiving a house rent allowance, despite the fact that he was residing in a government allotted residence.

The audit report reflected that the Vice chancellor AIOU, while defying the norms of merit, made appointment to the posts of registrar control examination thus violating even the rules and regulations. The audit has declared these appointments illegal and has directed to withdraw the funds.

According to the report the appointments of SulemanSaleemActing Treasurer, Ilyas Ahmad Tegistrar, Hafeezullah Registrar, ShabbirChaudhry Registrar, Hafiz ullah, Controller Examination and Bashir Chaudhry Controller Examination have also been declared illegal.

The AIOU vice chancellor wasted funds amounting to Rs 29.5 million against illegal printing of books. Funds against house rents were provided to Shahid Iqbal Kamran, Samina Aman, Falak NazAmjid and Shagufta Sirajm besides allotting official residences to them.

The report says that a sum of Rs 8.7 million have been plundered in the name of furniture, tractor and other machinery in the Higher Education Commission.
