ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC)’s Administration looks all set to re-instate former Registrar, Dr Ahmed Nadeem Akbar, allegedly involved in 100 million rupees corruption scams, Daily Times had learnt.

Neither the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had cleared Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Akbar from corruption cases nor had the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) completed its trial against him but the disputed body of PM&DC is prepared to relieve the former registrar who was terminated from services in 2013 on corruption charges.

Later, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued stay orders against the dismissal orders of Dr. Nadeem Akber on his appeal.

As many as 19 FIRs of corruption, irregularities, embezzlement of funds in various schemes and misuse of powers were registered against the former registrar Dr. Nadeem Akbar by the Police, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the National Accountability Bureau in 2013.

Nadeem Akbar had been working on the post of PM&DC Registrar from 2007 to 2013. Cases were of corruption were registered against him in the PMDC building construction, irregularities in hiring new staff, and corruption in recognition of medical colleges.

According to the PM&DC sources, when he took over the charge of the Registrar’s Office in 2007, there were only 23 registered medical colleges in the country since inception, which reached to 87 in only five years.

Most of the colleges included those that didn’t follow the PM&DC rules and criteria. Fake doctors were also registered — those that couldn’t clear the PMDC exam.

According to sources, Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Akbar had been allegedly involved in issuance of bogus certificates to non-qualified doctors and grabbing over Rs 100 million per National Examination Board.

The Ramana Police Station had registered a case against the ex-registrar under Section 420, 468, 471 and 499 PPC, against the above offence while the FIA Peshawar also registered a case against him.

Sources revealed that the signatures of Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Akbar were also confirmed on bogus certificates through forensic reports.

The NAB Rawalpindi authorised inquiries against the ex-registrar and others allegedly involved in corruption in recognition of sub-standard medical and dental colleges, issuance of bogus certificates to fake doctors, corruption in construction of the PMDC Headquarters building and accumulation of assets beyond the known sources of income.

According to the NAB, Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Akbar was allegedly involved in corruption of Rs 100 million during his tenure and he, reportedly, also owns a Swiss Account. The ex-registrar was accused of cheating the PMDC and getting approval of recognition of 19 medical and dental colleges in a single day.

On the basis of concrete evidence gathered by NAB, the name of Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Akbar was placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) to ensure the trial of his cases successfully.
