ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has called two National Highways Authority (NHA) officials for recording their statements over alleged corruption worth Rs 14 billion in the Karachi-Lahore Motorway project.

NHA Chairman Shahid Ashraf Tarrar and General Manager Mukhtar Durrani will appear before the bureau this week.

NAB had started investigating the case after it received a letter from the Transparency International, Pakistan pointing out irregularities in the project. The NAB Executive Board approved investigating the case in July, 2016. The NAB chairman then assigned the enquiry to Rawalpindi NAB DG and directed him to investigate the matter and send him the report.

The allocated budget for Karachi-Lahore Motorway project is Rs 148 billion. The contract of the project was awarded to a Chinese company, China Railways 20th Bureau Group Corporation, and a Pakistani firm, ZKB, jointly. In its letter, the Transparency International stated that the NHA had transferred Rs 14 billion in illegal profits to both the companies.

NAB will record the statements of the NHA chairman and the NHA GM about the case. The project is being completed under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
