KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Tuesday remanded the sixth suspect in police custody in a case related to the murder of a couple on the pretext of honor.

Police produced Umar Hayat before the judicial magistrate (Malir) and sought his physical remand for questioning. The court extended the physical remand of five suspects for two days and directed the investigation officer to submit progress report on the next hearing. Irfana and her cousin Azmat were allegedly killed and buried by their relatives on Oct 25 this year in Madina Town, Quaidabad, in the name of honour.

Police had earlier produced five suspects, including brothers of the slain woman, Saeed Nawaz, Sarfaraz Khan and Umar Nawaz, her uncle Lal Qadir and his son Hidayatullah, before the judicial magistrate to seek their remand. Police had declared the victim woman’s husband, Nizam Khan, his brother Arshad, and Zainullah, as absconders in the remand papers. A district court (Malir) had earlier allowed the IO to exhume the victims’ bodies when the court was told that their bodies were needed for a post-mortem examination. According to the investigation officer, the relatives of the couple had killed and buried them in a local graveyard after a jigra decision over their alleged extramarital affair.

A case was registered under sections 302 (premeditated murder), 201(causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform), 109 (abetment) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Shah Latif Town police station.
