Peshawar schools lack laboratories, science teachers

PESHAWAR: It is always dark under the candle as majority of the government schools at the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are without science laboratories and science teachers.

Despite of education emergency at the province number of main government high schools and higher secondary schools in cantonment and city have been lacking of science laboratories.

Government Shaheed Osama Zafer Centennial Model High School No.2 Peshawar City has four sections of science students but no science Lab for the students.

Talking to Daily Times the teacher of the school requesting of anonymity said that around 300 students of science in four sections perusing their study without the facility of science laboratory and required apparatus for a science students. He said that education department of the KP was well aware of the situation and even official letters have also been dispatched to the concern body for immediate action so the future of the students could be safeguarded but of no use till today.

Due to certain gapes at the government schools such as science laboratories, staff and books most of the government schools lag behind to secure any top ten positions in the last SSC examinations. However, the department of education claimed that unprecedented allocation in the budget has been made for the education sector and with passage of time all reservations and loopholes in the sector would be plugged.

The result of the science students last year caused embarrassment for the schools and education department of the KP. “I do not understand how KP education minister expressed satisfaction over the schools condition despite vulnerable condition of the government schools even in the provincial capital”, he added. Similarly, the other government schools located at the heart of provincial capital running out of proper science laboratories, proper equipments and some of them without of even science teachers Daily Times observed.

Roman Khan a social activist told this scribe that government being the champion of education, failed to provide modern science laboratories, staff and equipment in Peshawar what would be condition in far flung areas of the province.

Referring Government Shaheed Osama Zafer Centennial Model High School No.2 Peshawar City, he said that the teachers staff of the schools would have hardly manage to teach the science subject to students of science cadre.

“Some of schools at Peshawar have the labs for one subject such as biology but not for chemistry, the other school may be chemistry laboratory but not for the physics even there would no single school in Peshawar district where students have complete facility of complete science laboratory for all science subject”, Roman claimed.

Meanwhile, Government Shaheed Osama Zafer Centennial Model High School No.2 Peshawar City Principal Islam-u-Din rejected all these news and termed it baseless. He said that school has a total of 21 teachers including 10 science teachers and all of these are well qualified. He said that there are three labs and all of these are well equipped. The principal said that every year they purchased of latest equipment for which they annually received Rs 20,000.
