KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court indicted a suspect, said to be a local leader of Awami National Party (ANP), on Tuesday for the murder of known philanthropist and Orangi Pilot Project’s (OPP) director Parveen Rehman.

The ATC-II judge read out the charges against prime suspect Rahim Swati. However, he pleaded not guilty and opted to contest the case. The Judge, therefore, summoned prosecution witnesses to record their evidence on the next hearing.

The hearing was put off until Nov 23.

Key suspect Rahim swati, who is said to a local leader of ANP, was arrested from Mansehra in May, 2016. He was arrested by a special police team formed on the directives of the Supreme Court which had taken notice of the failure of law enforcement agencies to nab the accused persons.

Two absconding suspects, including Noor Muhammad and Ihsanuddin, had been declared proclaimed offenders after the investigation officer failed to execute the non-bailable warrants issued time and again by the court for their arrest.

Parveen Rehman, 56, was a social worker and known for devoting her life to the development of the impoverished neighborhoods. She was gunned down near her office in Orangi Town on March 13, 2013.

An FIR was registered under Section 353, 324 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (7-ATA).
