‘Paris of Sindh’ faces myriad civic problems

Author: Waheed Phulpoto

Shikarpur city, once called a ‘Paris of Sindh’ for its planned beautification and discipline, is facing multiple civic problems as elected representatives as well as the district administration are not focusing on the basic issues of the areas.

A collapsed drainage system is causing serious civic problems while deteriorating infrastructure is worsening the traffic flow in the city. The current situation needs immediate attention of the departments responsible for the management of the civic situation in the city.

Drain water has taken all roads including Hathi Dar, Lakhi Dar, Station Road, Hazari Dar, Girls’ College Road, in front of police post and Jumani but the responsible body of the North Sindh Urban Services Corporation (NSUSC) has failed to come up with measures to save the commuters from this civic menace. Citizens have appealed to the local departments to take notice of the matter and ensure cleanliness in the city.

The North Sindh Urban Services Corporation has been established under the Companies Ordinance 1984 for the secondary cities of northern cluster of the province. The corporation will aggregate participating TMA’s water supply, waste water and solid waste management operation in a single institution to leverage economies of scale, introduce new skills and management, and increase focus on operations, maintenance and financial management.
