‘We are still deprived of political freedom’

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has rejected the proposed compensation to be paid to the descendants of missing persons.

Addressing a press conference in MQM’s temporary headquarters in PIB Colony on Thursday, Opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan urged the federal and the provincial governments to establish a commission to monitor security operation in Karachi.

He said that compensation was abuse of human rights without declaring whereabouts of the detainees. He said that MQM has been flourishing with new sprit. “We are still deprived of political freedom,” he pointed out. “People of Karachi believe in MQM rather than the national institutions and they are patriotic citizens. We expect justice from the judiciary; if you want to satisfy people of Karachi then it is necessary for the authorities to treat their wounds,” he said. A committee – established on the directives of the Supreme Court over missing persons – has summoned the family members of 21 missing persons and has offered compensation, he informed the journalists. But “we completely reject it,” he said.

“We do not need money, we want to know about their whereabouts and if in custody then the allegations which are leveled against them,” he said. The committee will meet on Saturday in which “we will reject compensation over recent 21 detainees and would demand to grant reasonable compensation to the families of those who are missing since 25 years.”

He said that MQM has changed its lines of action and now it would thrive as a famous party of Sindh and it will welcome all to the party without lingual, racial or religious discrimination.
