KARACHI: A district and sessions court granted bail to former lawmaker Faisal Raza Abidi on Thursday in a case pertaining to possession of illegal arms.

The district and sessions judge of Malir approved the bail for the former senator against the surety bond of Rs 50,000. Abdi, who is incarcerated since November 7, moved the bail application through his counsel seeking post-arrest bail.

Police said to have arrested Abidi over his alleged involvement in the killing of two members of the Tableeghi Jamaat and possessing illegal arms. Earlier, the judicial magistrate (Malir) had sent him to prison on judicial remand till Nov 19 in the illegal arms case. However, the police had not yet shown his arrest in the murder case.

The PPP leader, who had resigned his senate seat in 2014, was arrested on Nov 7. The police claimed to have confiscated sophisticated weapons from his house. On November 4, two members of the Tableeghi Jamaat were targeted at the Patel Para in Jamshed Quarters as they were returning after offering Friday prayers.

The police had registered an FIR (379/2016) in connection with the double killings at the Jamshed Quarters police station under Section 302 (murder) and 7-ATA (Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997) on complaint of the victims’ relative Ghulam Mohammed.
