Sir: AIDs is a destructive disease that causes many financial, mental and physical difficulties for patients and their families. AIDs is also a disease that creates fear, misunderstanding, and discrimination in our society, all because of a lack of knowledge and awareness about this disease in Pakistan.
The irony is that every HIV patient is put under isolation and is socially boycotted. Moreover, the NACP report highlights that 13,000 people are infected with HIV in Pakistan. According to the Sindh AIDs Control Program (SACP), Sindh contains half the total number of AIDS victims in Pakistan. Out of a total of 56,969 patients, 42,000 are in Sindh-the highest figure reported in the past 20 years.
In order to help patients, we must reduce their isolation and the discrimination they face, and we must have proper tests and treatments for this disease.
