Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday held an important meeting in which security situation of the country and region were discussed along with other important issues.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has been given an extension in term for another three years by PM Imran Khan. The decision to extend the employment of the COAS was taken in view of the security situation in the region.

Gen Bajwa was previously acting as commander of an important Rawalpindi Corps and was employed as Inspector General Training and Evaluation at the GHQ, a position General Raheel Sharif held before becoming the COAS. In November 2016, General Bajwa assumed leadership as the new army chief of Pakistan.

According to reports, Prime Minister Imran Khan and Gen Bajwa discussed the overall security situation along with the situations in Indian-held Kashmir and the Line of Control (LoC).

Meanwhile Imran Khan Thursday chaired a meeting of the Kashmir Core Group wherein the participants agreed to the measures to further reinforce Pakistan’s efforts in the political, diplomatic, legal and media domains to highlight the Kashmir cause worldwide.

The meeting was attended by the foreign minister, minister for law and justice, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, special assistant to prime minister on information and broadcasting, attorney general of Pakistan and other senior officials, a statement issued by the PM’s Office said.

The main focus of the meeting was on Pakistan’s extensive political and diplomatic outreach and efforts to raise awareness among the international community about the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in IHK and the serious risks to peace and security posed by India’s illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019.

The continued lockdown of millions of Kashmiris since August 5 and Indian repression and growing atrocities were strongly condemned. The meeting reaffirmed Pakistan’s abiding solidarity with the Kashmiri brethren in siege.

It was noted that the international community, including the UN Security Council, international human rights organisations, international humanitarian organisations and the international media had taken cognizance of the serious situation, and calls were growing on India to immediately lift the curfew and other restrictions, besides alleviating the sufferings of the Kashmiri people. During the meeting, the core group agreed to the measures to enable the people of IHK to realise their right to self-determination.
