Indus River has started eroding Hakra dyke due to which panic has been created among the villagers living in nearby villages.

According to local journalist Ghulam Mustafa, erosion is being made up to half a kilometer in length, which is expected to continue during night also. He said if breach is occurred then it will endanger world heritage site of Mohenjo Daro, Cadet College and over 50 villages located nearby. He said irrigation department officials of Dokri Northern Dadu Canal Division have established a camp and heavy machinery has also been deployed. He said if embankment is not saved then great danger is imminent. He said instead of bringing heavy stones the irrigation department officials have brought small stones which are useless as the water flow is so rapid that it digests all stones immediately. He said work on this dyke should have been completed long ago but laziness has brought this situation.

He said officials are trying their level best to stop the erosion and work is under progress day & night which shows emergency-like situation. Villagers Sarang Hulio, Dodo Deshi and others said that over 50 villagers will submerge into water if any breach, God forbid, occurred adding work is going on in a very slow pace which has raised panic among them besides several questions.

They said historical and cultural monuments of Mohenjo Daro and cadet college will also come under water if anything happened to Hakra Bund. They said they are passing nights sleepless due to danger. Irrigation Department engineer Munir Morio said that round the clock work is underway to stop further erosion. He claimed that there is no danger to the protective dyke and erosion will be controlled.
