ACAPULCO: At least 24 people – some bearing signs of torture – were found dead in a series of incidents in Mexico’s southern state of Guerrero, officials said.

Mexico’s Security Spokesman Roberto Alvarez told a Mexican television channel on Monday that in wake of this rising bloodshed, the state governor held an “urgent session” with the army and federal police to strengthen security in the region.

Bodies of nine males, with visible signs of torture, were discovered placed on a road between the towns of Tixtla and Atliaca, the state’s secretary of security said in a statement.

Agents at the local prosecutor’s office reported finding four bodies with their feet and hands tied, and noted that the authorities also recovered five black plastic bags which contained the remains of five more people. The five bodies had been mutilated, a Tixtla police commander told AFP, requesting anonymity for security reasons. Meanwhile, five more people were found dead elsewhere in the state.

Alvarez said that at least 10 more people were killed in Guerrero’s Pacific resort during this weekend of bloodshed, including two members of the Navy.
