MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Tuesday that introduces prison terms for the coaches and the medical staff coercing athletes into using banned performance-enhancing drugs.
The law comes into force as Russia has been working to clean up its image – which was tarnished when evidence of state-sponsored doping surfaced. Moscow saw its athletics team and the entire Paralympics squad out of the Rio Games this summer over banned drugs’ usage.
The legislation calls for a one-year jail term for officials who force a minor to dope or resort to violence and threats to make an athlete dope. Russia approved the draft law earlier this month.
The law does not outline any punishments for the athletes who are identified as drug cheats – with lawmakers saying further legislation is being planned.
A widespread state-backed doping by Russia was disclosed in the McLaren report, commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and released in the build-up to the Rio Games.
