English Linguistics can be a worthy profession

Author: Zonish Muneer

To speak is to improve. This world evolved because of human communication. We change the society’s minds. Language is a medium through which we made our lives easy. Linguistics is a science of language. Some people get confused about it they think that it means to learn many languages. It means to learn how language came into being. It can be about any language. In Pakistan English linguistics is very popular because English is our international language and it is a need of today’s world.

There are so many professions in it. Firstly, let me tell you about its courses which you can select according to your need and desire. Phonology is the study of production of speech sounds, in which we study how to pronounce words in English. Second is Semantics which means that what is the meaning of words. In English there are many meanings of one word. Third is Syntax in which we study about the making of sentences. These three branches of linguistics are its bread and butter and rest of others are the minor parts they are Sociolinguistics, pragmatics and computational linguistics.

In Pakistan, one can find many jobs for example that of a translator which is really worthy in media and one can even apply at various channels for that. Speech therapy is done by the help of a phonologist who teaches us pronunciation. Teaching is a common field and one may join a university for that. Lexicography is also a worthy profession so you may go ahead in it I think compiling dictionaries is a fun task. TESOL (Teaching English to the students of other language) is an interesting field and it can help you if you want to make good money because it is demanded.

Opting for the field of English Linguistics is a lucrative decision because this language has a lot of worth in our society.
