“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these 10 days.” The people asked, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing” (Bukhari).
Among all the nine days of fasting, the ninth day holds prime importance and all the bounties and rewards are double for fasting on this particular day. It is also to show solidarity with the pilgrims and to prepare for the upcoming festivities of Eidul Azha. As Abu Hafsah explained that fasting on the ninth day of Zil-Hajj absolves the sins of two years: the previous and the upcoming. Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said, The Prophet said, “One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to the worship in the Lailatul-Qadr” (Tirmidhi).
Most commonly observed virtues that hold an immense significance and rewards during these days of Zil-hajj are increasing Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah), prostration, self-reflection and supplication. Sadqa or charity is highly encouraged by mostly people during these days as well as on Eid-al-Azha. Two supplications, which according to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) are lighter on tongue, heavier in the balance and cherished the most by Allah are: “Subhan AllahiWabihamdihi, SubhanAllahilAzeem” (Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him). Important Adhkaar include Tahleel ( Laailaahail-lal-laah), Tahmeed (Alhamdulillaah), Tasbeeh (Subhanallaah), and Takbeer ( Allahu Akbar). Moreover, on the day of Arafah, reciting duaa of Arafah has a unique significance. Lastly, remember the last sermon of Holy Prophet (PBUH) and see how much do you actually practice in your daily life. Try to reflect the teachings of Propeht Muhammad (PBUH) in your life and personality. The Holy month of Zil-Hajj indeed is a great opportunity for self-assessment and strengthening your bond with Allah Almighty.
While the pilgrims are earning great rewards and blessings by performing Hajj, non-pilgrims cannot stay behind in prostration and supplication to get the best out of this blessed month. It is not a compulsion to fast during these days, but if done rightly, Allah endears this fasting and supplication the most. Muslims tend to compete in righteousness as life is surely uncertain.
