KARACHI: The Sindh High Court asked the federal authorities on Friday to explain as to why former provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon’s name was placed on the Exit Control List (ECL).
A division bench of SHC directed the federal law officer to file written comments of the interior secretary before Dec 09.
The deputy attorney general submitted that there was no bar on his return to the country. However, he cannot travel abroad since his name is placed on the ECL.
The former information minister, who is living in self-exile in London, had moved to the court seeking the removal of his name from the ECL.
Sharjeel’s lawyer submitted that the federal authorities had placed his name on the ECL without any plausible reason. He added that despite repeated attempts his client was not being provided the memorandum regarding placement of his name on the ECL.
He stated that Mr Memon wanted to return to the country to face corruption cases but might go back to London again for medical treatment. Therefore, he apprehended that he would not be allowed because of barrier placed on his movement.
Citing the federal interior secretary, and the NAB’s director general as respondents, the petitioner pleaded the court to order the authorities concerned to remove his name from the ECL.
