The death of Cuba’s Fidel Castro, who passed away overnight at the age of 90, obtained reactions from leaders and figures from around the world, many of whom remembered him as a friend and an ally, while exiles in Miami celebrated his death on Saturday.

Back in September he commented on the historic rapprochement between the US and Cuba, threatening to reverse the orders unless the Castro regime met their demands, which included religious and political freedom for the Cuban people and the freedom of political prisoners.

Putin pays tribute to ‘symbol of an era’ Castro

“The name of this distinguished statesman is rightly considered the symbol of an era in modern world history,” the Russian president said in a message to Cuban President Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother, “Fidel Castro was Russia’s sincere friend.”

UN chief

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon extended condolences to the Cuban people and to the family of former President Fidel Castro.

“At this time of mourning, I offer the UN’s support to Cuba,” Ban told reporters. He offered his particular condolences to Cuban President Raul Castro Ruz.

Recalling his meeting with the former President during a visit to Cuba in January 2014, the UN chief said that the two had held a lively discussion that covered developments around the world.

Castro will live forever, says Chinese president

“Under former President Castro, Cuba made advances in the fields of education and health. I hope that Cuba will continue to advance on a path of reform and greater prosperity,” he added.
