LAHORE: The army chiefs are always selected from the senior generals of the army but hardly ever does the senior most army chief get the chance to become the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

General Ayub Khan was the fourth in seniority list when he became the army chief, while General Muhammad Musa was also fourth on the list when he was appointed.

Similarly, General Yahya Khan was the third most senior general when he was made the army chief and General Gul Hassan was also on third number in the list. However, General Tikka Khan was the senior most at the time of his appointment.

General Ziaul Haq was given the promotion from eighth number but General Aslam Beg was the senior most at the time of his appointment as army chief.

General Waheed Kakar was the fifth on the list. General Jahangir Karamat was the senior most. General Pervez Musharraf was the third most senior when he was made the army chief.

General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani was given promotion from second number and General Raheel Sharif from number three.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who was announced as the next army chief on Saturday, was fourth on the list.
