KARACHI: The industrialists of tannery zone (Landhi-Korangi) are waiting for the implementation of orders by Commissioner Aijaz Ahmed Khan for the clearing of solid waste and garbage from the tannery zone and cleaning of nullahs. Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) Chairman Gulzar Firoz, former PTA chairman Aziz Ahmed, PTA Vice Chairman Abdul Salam and PTA Local Bodies Committee Southern Zone Chairman Amir Majeed expressed these views. The PTA representatives said that many foreigners visit Sector 7-A (tannery zone) where there are more than 150 tanneries employing more than 15,000 workers. They expressed the view that this area produced more than 50 percent of the total exports of leather and leather goods from Pakistan, hence, carpeting of roads in the zone was absolutely necessary. The representatives hoped that cleaning operations in the area would be commenced soon. They also expressed their satisfaction over carpeting of Road 5000 leading from Shan Chowk to tannery zone. Ahmed said that leather exports were suffering due to the lack of infrastructure and basic utilities in the tannery zone. He added that despite the laying of pipelines costing Rs 84 million for the supply of water to tannery zone by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) still had not released water into the pipeline. Ahmed appealed to the CM to order KWSB to release water into the pipeline without further delay.
