LAHORE: The Government College University Lahore has won the Lahore Board Inter-Collegiate Gymnastics and Badminton Championships besides securing third positions in Inter-Universities Athletics and Squash Championships organised by the Higher Education Commission. According to details, Team GCU stood first in Inter-Collegiate Gymnastics Championship by clinching four out of total six gold medals. While Punjab College Lahore and Islamia College Civil Lines Lahore secured the second and third positions respectively in the contest which was organised by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Lahore.
Syed Noor Khan from GCU was declared the best gymnast, while Ravians Arab Jan and Abdul Wakeel also secured gold medals. The GCU sportsmen also lifted the team trophy at the BISE Inter-Collegiate Badminton Championship. Team GCU, comprising Sahil-e-Arwand, Abul Kalam Azad, Muhammad Talha, Yasir Rehman and Muhammad Sajjad, defeated Superior College in semi-finals and then Punjab College in the finals of the tournament.
The Ravians also secured the third position among the 47 educational institutions participating in the HEC Inter-Universities Athletics Championship by winning one gold and three bronze medals. GCU athlete Muhammad Ramzan clinched one gold and two bronze medals. Mohsin Naveed also secured the Bronze Medal. Team GCU, comprising Ahmad Ali, Adnan Ali Nawaz and Jahnzeb Khan, beat Sarhad University in a match for third position in the in Inter-Universities Championship.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah and Director Sports Khadim Ali Khan have congratulated the Ravian sportsmen on their excellent performance. The Director Sports said that GCU was one of the finest sports nurseries for producing and grooming sportsmen for national teams, and had been maintaining its tradition of excellence in sports since 1947. He said the sports history of GC University could be traced from the 1931-32 session when GC became the overall champion and won the general trophy of college and universities games for the first time.
