LAHORE: The City Traffic Police (CTP) has succeeded to discourage the practice of not wearing helmets while riding motorbikes, as a majority of bikers have started wearing helmets with the ratio reaching record level of 70 percent.
According to sources, the traffic police authorities are planning to increase this ratio. The authorities are also working on the idea of eliminating traffic rules violations step by step.
Earlier, the CTP in collaboration with the Atlas Honda had carried out several awareness campaigns across the city in which a number of helmets were distributed among citizens to make them aware about safe riding.
Meanwhile, citizens have railed against surge in helmets’ price owing to the campaigns. They said that the department concerned had failed to control price hike. They urged the government and the departments concerned to bound motorcycle companies to provide helmets to buyers at the time of sale of motorcycles.
Meanwhile, CTP Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ali Nawaz has said the department would makes strict restrictions to enforce the usage of helmets while riding. He said the department would hold more awareness drives to sensitise people on traffic rules so that number of accidents on city roads could be decreased.
It may be mentioned that a number of accidents – involving motorcyclists – happened everyday in the city and the majority of deaths occur due to injuries to heads.
Experts recommend the use of good quality helmets, as those made of poor material could break down in accidents causing injury to the brain. Fibreglass helmets are a bit expensive but carry the warranty that they are unbreakable and can guard motorcyclists up to a great extent.
