ISLAMABAD: A legislative body of Upper House on Friday decided to make legislation for transgender people. In this regard, their representative, along with NADRA officials, will attend the next meeting to discuss the issue of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) to them.
The provincial and federal representatives of the transgender community will attend the next meeting so that a draft of legislation for this neglected community is prepared as soon as possible. The Senate Special Committee on Marginalised Segments held its meeting today in parliament house while Senator Nisar Muhammad Khan was on chair. The committee recommended equal rights for transgender and stressed that the transgender community should be equally treated like other citizens and they should be provided CNICs accordingly.
Federal Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid also attended the meeting while senators Farhatullah Babar, Sitara Ayaz, Rubina Khalid and Samina Abid also attended the meeting. The committee decided on the proposal of Senator Farhatullah Babar that in the next meeting, the representatives of transgender community would also be invited in order to listen to their grievances and problems. The committee also decided that NADRA officials would also be invited in the meeting to discuss the matter related to transgender community CNICs.
The committee expressed serious reservations over the performance of National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR), specially related for the welfare of the transgender community. “Why could the NCHR not take notice of the maltreatment of the transgender community? The NCHR totally failed to protect the right of this neglected people of the society,” Nisar Mohammad Khan said. He also suggested that the transgender community were the most neglected segment of the society and legal aid should be provided to them as soon as possible.
The Law and Justice Minister Zahid Hamid also claimed that making CNICs for transgender people was not a big issue and assured the committee the law ministry was ready to do it.
