Syed Shahmeer Raza had filed the petition. It was heard by a full bench of the LHC, comprising Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Chaudhry Masood Jahangir and Justice Jawad Hassan.
The bench remarked that since major health hazards such as cancer were a direct result of consumption of food contained in plastic packaging, it involved the health and wellbeing of the public at large.
The petitioner’s counsel stated that polythene bags and single-use plastic had contributed drastically to the environment pollution and posed a threat to the ecosystem. “There exists no adequate policy or legislation on the matter,” he said.
The court issued notices to respondent departments such as the Environment Protection Department and Local Government Department along with three multinational companies who were deemed to be major international contributors to plastic pollution globally to appear before the Court on the next date with replies and reports.
Osama Zafar, Chaudhry Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Muhammad Saad Bin Ghazi appeared before the bench.
