Saving lives: LHC to hear petition on mandated airbags, safety equipment in cars

Author: News Desk

Lahore High Court (LHC), on Monday, received a petition seeking mandatory airbags among other safety equipment in vehicles to prevent losses of lives incurred in road accidents. Advocate Safdar Shaheen Peerzada filed the petition urging the court to direct car manufacturers to install airbags and other safety equipment in cars. The petition maintained that auto manufacturers were selling their vehicles at high prices yet they lacked safety equipment. “The non-availability of airbags and other safety equipment in cars result in the loss of lives in accidents,” he added. The court was requested to impose a ban on the introduction of new models of auto vehicles without safety equipment. Furthermore, the advocate appealed to the court to impose another ban on driving at a speed over 60 kilometres/hour within city remits and also direct traffic police to ensure the enforcement of a ban on underage driving.
