LAHORE: A group of public school teachers have once again threaten to hold a massive sit in if their demands are not met, Daily times has learnt.

The All Punjab Asatza Alliance (APAA) has planned to hold protest against the government, which according to them has failed to meet their demands for the last few years. Some of their demands included increase in salaries, regularization and upgradation of pay scales.

This is not the first time that schoolteachers have warned government of protest, as several groups of teachers had earlier held protest rallies and sit-ins outside the Punjab Assembly to press the government against their demands. However, protests and sit-ins were later ended after the Punjab government and the School Education Departments assurances.

Meanwhile, talking to Daily Times, APAA President Sufi Ramzan said that education was not a priority of the rulers, as more than 80 percent of budget was being spent on infrastructure.

“Our rulers always praise Turkish government but they must have compared their education budget with that of Turkey, as they spend 6 percent on education while we are spending only 2 percent,” he added. Ramzan said that teachers, who were hired thirteen years ago, are getting basic pay of Rs 6,000.

He said that even a labourer was earning more money than that of a teacher. “If the government will not fulfil our demands, we will hold a massive protest on December 31 outside the Lahore Press club, he warned.
