The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday directed the provincial education secretary to present a report on educational reforms in Sindh on May 24.
The high court was hearing a petition seeking details of free education facility and other reforms in the education sectors of the province.
Provincial Education Secretary Qazi Shahid Pervez appeared at the hearing and said that he wanted to hold a session with the petitioner.
“We want to tell the petitioner about all of our efforts for education. We will provide all details about expenditures of the education department,” he said.
The high court accepted the plea and ordered the petitioner and the education secretary to sit together to find out a solution for the matter. The SHC judge directed parties to present a report on May 24.
During the hearing, Pervez informed the SHC that the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) had announced a $100 million grant for education. “The Sindh government will present its proposal before the global organisation in Nepal on May 27,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the provincial government would get a bigger share of the funds. The official said that the authorities had prepared a plan which would be presented in the upcoming conference.
Pervez said that $50 million was granted by the European Union (EU) and $100 million funds would be provided by Japanese ambassador for education. “Sindh is the only province which spends 28 per cent of its budget on education. The government has allocated Rs 1 billion for purchasing new furniture for schools,” he said.
Later, the hearing was adjourned till May 24.
