Let’s plant more trees!

We need trees because every creature’s life depends on them for survival. They are important to a man’s life in various ways. Trees add beauty to the world we live in. Whenever we think of any place where we can enjoy ourselves and rest comfortably, either trees or mountains come to our mind. Trees always make an essential part of life even when we think of heaven; we imagine trees laden with fruits by the side of clear and cool streams.

No place of beauty in the world is complete without trees, that is why when we have to select a picnic spot, we generally keep in mind the presence of shady trees laden with fruits. Trees have helped man in discovering new places. For the earliest man, it was very difficult and dangerous to travel on land. He must have used trunks to travel on the rivers. Then large boats and ships were made of wood and man was able to move from one part of the world to the other. Our history owes much to trees whose wood helped large armies to move across foreign lands.

Furthermore, trees provide the raw materials for many industries like for furniture, boats, doors and window frames. The wood is also used as fuel for cooking and heating. Wooden poles are used to assist telephone and electricity lines in many countries. In this way, trees have opened new possibilities for mankind. The trees play a very important role in agriculture and farming. They check the force of winds and rain. They help to preserve the land, the roots of the trees bind the soil together. They slow down the erosion process and they do preserve the landslides, animals and birds.

In the last hundred years or so, the average world temperature has risen by 0.7 degree centigrade. This increase in temperature is going to melt more and more ice near the poles. The amount of water will increase in the oceans and thus raise their level. Some islands in the south western pacific are already in the danger of being submerged. People all over the world will have to make an effort to increase the number of trees so that a happy and healthy world is ensured..

Some countries have plenty of trees and they are prosperous because of their large forests. Good timber is sold for good cash.

Malaysia is the largest producer of rubber in the world. Rubber is collected from rubber trees. So trees earn a lot of revenue for them, trees which also serve us in many other commercial ways. They do produce delicious fruits which we eat. We send them to other countries, too. The leaves, bark and roots of the trees are used for making different kind of medicines, herbs which are used for untreated diseases locally in some regions. There was a time when malaria used to kill a large number of people.

Thus, Malaria has been controlled by guanine which is made from cinchona tree and corks are obtained from the trunks of the cork-oak.

In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. Trees are not a taxonomic group but include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a woody trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. In wider definitions, the taller palms, tree ferns, bananas, and bamboos are also trees. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are just over 3 trillion mature trees in the world.

A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree’s growth and development.

Trees usually reproduce using seeds. Flowers and fruit may be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones. Palms, bananas and bamboos also produce seeds, but tree ferns produce spores instead.

Trees play a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their tissues. Trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals and plants. Tropical rainforests are among the most biodiverse habitats in the world. Trees provide shade and shelter, timber for construction, fuel for cooking and heating, and fruit for food as well as having many other uses. In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture. Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures and they play a role in many of the world’s mythologies.
