‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ is all about being the real you. Based on a French novel The Ingredients of Love written by Nicholas Barreau, the 122 minute film was released on August 18, 2017 and was written by Nitesh Tiwari. It was produced by Vineet Jain and directed by Ashwiny Lyer Tiwari.

Kriti Sanon and Ayushmann Khurrana played the leading roles and Rajkummar Rao features as a supporting actor in the film.

Why I consider the film to be meaningful is because it highlighted the discrimination which is faced by girls in India as men live the way they want but women are told to be a certain type of way so that they do not get rejected by men.

Men can be out even late in the night, smoke cigarettes, watch unclean films and even get away with it when they divorce their wives wrongfully but women are suppressed over everything. Women are supposed to be a virgin before marriage but when it comes to men, it is alright. Also, one very important factor the film highlights is how girls are demanded to change their personalities and nature to please their husbands but men can be however and whatever they already are.

The story revolves around the life of a girl called Bitti who is in search of a life partner. She needs a husband who understands her and cares for her. However, all she gets is rejection from the mothers of various boys.

One day, she reads a book titled Acceptance and is greatly touched by it. She decides to meet its writer as the lead protagonist of the book also shares her name.

Bitti and the writer become good friends, fall in love and get married, only because he accepts and adores her the way she is.

The film was both a critical as well as a commercial success at the box office. Nitesh Tiwari was lauded for bringing such an issue to the fore, where women’s rights and predicaments were highlighted. Kriti Sanon’s acting skills were greatly appreciated and she proved that she’s more than just a pretty face.

Every girl needs to see this film as it teaches them the importance of being their true self and not to change for anyone.

It’s been two years that the film came out and that was the last time that Bollywood produced meaningful content, where core issues were discussed.
