Wife of a missing person on Thursday threatened to commit suicide if her husband was not recovered. According to reports, the Sindh High Court (SHC) heard a case pertaining to a missing person named Adil Bara who went missing four years ago. Family of the said missing person appeared before the court and alleged that Bara was abducted by the law enforcement agencies. His wife told the court that if her husband was not recovered until the next hearing, she would commit suicide in front of the court.

Adil’s mother pleaded the court to inform the family if he had been killed. The court, however, after seeking a report from law enforcers, adjourned the case’s hearing until August 8.

On the other hand, a large number of members of the civil society gathered outside the Karachi Press Club to express solidarity with families of missing persons.

For the last 11 days, the family members of 80 missing persons belonging to the Shia community have been peacefully protesting outside the residence of President Dr Arif Alvi, demanding to have knowledge about their whereabouts. According to reports, some of those 80 people have been missing for more than three years. Moreover, the protesters complained about maltreatment, saying that they were being accused of being anti-state. Some of the protesters were even arrested on Thursday, stated some media reports.

The civil society members condemned the enforced disappearances, crackdown on peaceful protesters, and their unwarranted arrests.

The protesters demanded the state to recognise this inhuman practice of enforced disappearances as a distinct crime, and bring those responsible for the disappearances to book.

They also said that false allegations against peaceful protesters should be removed and they be released immediately.
